In the sport of golf, we are always looking for the next great story, the underdog and rivalries. Ever since the 2007 Walker Cup, the golf world has seen the potential of what a rivalry between Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler could do for the sport, perhaps defining a golfing era.
While 2014 definitely was the Year of Rory as he captured some of golf’s biggest events (BMW PGA Championship, The Open Championship, WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, PGA Championship, Ryder Cup). He’s also had a string of runner-up finishes on the European Tour and most recently won the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. But with so much success last year, it was Fowler who chased him down on a regular basis.
Fowler also had one of his best years as a professional in 2014. After going through a dramatic swing change with Butch Harmon. Those changes helped him finish in the Top-5 of all four Major Championships in 2014. Although McIlroy has had the more successful career so far, you can almost feel that it is nearing Fowler’s time. He’s gotten the best of Rory before, during his first professional win in South Korea and first win on the PGA TOUR at the 2013 Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow. It will definitely be interesting to see their careers unfold and whether the Rory-Rickie rivalry will become the the new era rivalry similar to Jack-Arnold and Tiger-Phil.
In the video above, watch as Golfing World chats with Rickie Fowler about his own improvements and development as well as this budding rivalry with World Number One, Rory McIlroy. With just one month away until The Masters, where Rory will attempt to complete the career grand slam, we’re hoping to see the both of them in the final round on Sunday!
