Perhaps the talk of the 2015 Farmers Insurance Open heading into the weekend was the absence of Tiger Woods and the way in which he left the tournament. After a horrendous two days at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Woods withdrew from the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, a golf course where he’s won eight times, due to a stiff back and non-activating glutes after just 11 holes of the first round. Phil Mickelson would also miss the weekend and has failed to play the weekend in back-to-back events now as well. The sport of golf must go on though, even without some of the biggest names in the game.
The Farmers Insurance Open was played on both the North and South courses. The South course is where players teed it up on Sunday, a course that played more like a US Open today. Greens were firm, the rough was thick and grabby and the wind also picked up. The low round of the day was 67, with only six total rounds in the 60s. The last six threesomes combined to shoot 32 over par in the final round. It was certainly a tough day, with players trying to “survive.” Jason Day, Scott Stallings, Harris English and J.B. Holmes would battle it out in a four-man playoff.

On the second extra hole, the par-3 16th, JB Holmes would make a bogey while Day tapped in a par putt for his third PGA Tour victory. With the win, Day moves to fourth in the Official Golf World Ranking. After injuries plagued him all year in 2014, Day is finally healthy and ready to meet his goals. He’s got five top-four finishes in majors, including runner-ups at the Masters and the U.S. Open. Day is on everyone’s list of potential next great players and with this win and his health, we hope to see him fully meet his potential.
