The annual PGA Merchandise Show is where the golf industry shows off their latest and greatest products, ideas and more. It’s a great platform for smaller players in the golf industry, such as Big Fish Golf Singapore, as well as the bigger companies to tease the public with future equipment releases. Callaway’s new Mack Daddy 2 PM Grind is just that – it’s a new wedge designed by Phil Mickelson featuring a radical shape to help golfers get better performance from the most-lofted club in their bag. He even used a prototype during the 2014 PGA Championship.
The wedge has a high-toe design that creates a larger hitting area, especially when golfers open the clubface to hit shots around the green. This wedge was definitely inspired by Ping’s Eye 2, which Mickelson had been using on and off throughout the 2014 season. He worked directly with Roger Cleveland on this design – the higher toe allows Phil to create more spin on open-faced shots and the higher centre of gravity launches the ball slightly lower and with more spin. Grooves were also extended all the way to the end of the clubface, as Cleveland and Mickelson noticed he tended to hit the ball on the extreme toe area where there was typically no grooves.
The Mack Daddy 2 PM grind features a U-grin sole, which Mickelson also helped develop. The grind has a concave area in the middle of the sole and a tight leading edge radius that allows the leading edge to sit closer to the ground on open-face shots, making them easier to hit off tight lies. The Mack Daddy 2 PM Grind wedges ($129, available May 1) are cast from 8620 carbon steel and comes in a matte-chrome finish. They come stock with Mickelson’s favorite shaft, KBS Tour-V (wedge flex), and Golf Pride’s New Decade Multi Compound in four lofts (56, 58, 60 and 64 degrees).
