Dustin Johnson is one of the most talented athletes on the PGA Tour. His height and athleticism allows him to be one of the longest hitters in the game, which has helped him record at least one victory in every year he’s been professional. You could call that a successful career so far, but it’s definitely full of missed opportunities as well, particularly his mishaps at the US Open at Pebble Beach, the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits and Open Championship at Royal St. George’s. You could say, he’s yet to fulfill his full potential, which Dustin will agree with you on.
Last summer, Johnson took a leave of absence from the PGA Tour to resolve “personal issues” – it was reported that these issues involved a drug addiction (cocaine) and the leave of absence was actually a suspension by the PGA Tour for failing a drug test. Through his latest interviews, it seems like alcohol abuse was more of the culprit. In Johnson’s first interview since his leave of absence, he sits down with Tom Rinaldi of ESPN to clear the air and set the record straight. Take a look above.
Regardless of what he’s done in the past, this seems like a new, improved and focused Dustin Johnson. With the birth of his first child with Paulina Gretzky just earlier this week as well as a mentor in The Great One, Wayne Gretzky, we’re expecting big things from DJ in 2015. He’s also brought in a group of experts, including a life coach, and shrunk the number of people close to him. The true measuring stick of the changes he’s made will definitely be his actions once he returns – hopefully, his career will come full circle with a win at the 2015 PGA Championship this year at Whistling Straits. He’ll be making his season start at the Farmer’s Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.
