Callaway Golf announces yet another series of new golf equipment in their XR line of metalwoods and irons. The X-series has been such a large part of the company with Callaway first introducing the X-10 and subsequently the X-12, X-14, X-16, X-18, X-20, X22, X24 Hot and eventually the X-Hot line of clubs. The X-series before the “hot” line mainly featured blue accents, whereas the “hot” line featured orange accents. In their latest X-series offering, the XR line, Callaway seems to have returned to the roots of the X-series family and brought back the blue accents, which we love.
One of our team members have played the Callaway X-18 irons since it’s release and has a hard time letting them go. But the new XR irons might be the ones that brings him up to date with technology. In addition to XR irons, the new XR driver and fairway woods have also been announced. This family of equipment has been built for speed. Keep reading below to find out more about the entire line of XR equipment!
Similar to the PING G30 driver, the Callaway Golf XR driver also features ridges on the crown of the club. This is called their Speed Step Crown, designed to reduce drag and maximize speed through the swing. These ridges combined with an optimized aerodynamic head shape allows golfers to swing the club with more speed and less drag – what Callaway calls aero efficiency! The R-MOTO Face Technology is the new-and-improved Hyper Speed Face Cup technology to produce faster ball speeds, without sacrificing forgiveness. Lastly, Optifit adjustability allows golfers to choose from 8 different loft and lie configurations to find the perfect driver for your swing!
The XR fairway woods and hybrids had their head shape completely redesigned. The feature flatter leading edges and a higher toe. The face height is also shallower compared to the X2 Hot, aiming for players who prefer to use their woods from the fairway. The lighter, thinner, next generation Forged Hyper Speed Face Cup also produces higher ball speed and forgiveness across the entire face for more distance. Callaway has also re-engineered their Internal Standing Wave which pushes the centre of gravity lower and gets the weight low and forward for more distance and shot-making capabilities.
Lastly, Callaway Golf introduces their XR irons, an iron that is built for speed. The company has taken the Cup 360 technology that’s redefined ball speed in fairway woods and brought it to irons. Cup 360 technology acts like a spring on shots hit low on the face and increases ball speeds across the whole face as well and was first introduced in the Big Bertha irons. The internal standing wave lowers the centre of gravity for the irons and increases moment of inertia and ball speed.
The XR iron line includes both the XR and XR Pro irons. Similar to previous X-series irons, the XR irons can be considered game improvement irons whereas the XR Pro irons are can be considered more of a players iron (this has us questioning where the Apex and Apex Pro irons fit in now though). If you’re looking for a new set of irons and still want forgiveness while having some ability to shape shots, you may want to test out the XR irons!
