Jason Dufner’s Auburn pride is constantly on display. The 2013 PGA Champion has given speeches to Auburn University athletic teams, including their football team and basketball team, and even had a road named after him. But during the 2014 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, his Auburn pride was displayed for a more solemn reason.
During The Open Championship, Dufner had a “43” patch added to his golf bag, prime marketing real estate for a golfer, to honor and remember an Auburn community favourite. The number 43 was worn by the late Philip Lutzenkirchen, a tight end and leader on the 2010 national championship team. He died in a car crash on June 29 at the age of 23. “I wanted to let (Lutzenkirchen’s) real-close friends and family members know that people in the Auburn family were thinking about him, and that we weren’t going to forget him,” Dufner said.
