Happy New Years everyone! As we begin 2015, we can’t help but count the days until we see the pros tee it up again. It’s just 99 days left until Masters Thursday and 168 left until the first ever US Open in the pacific northwest. We have featured, as well as played, Chambers Bay Golf Course several times in anticipation of the 2015 US Open. If you don’t know much about the course, the video above by Golfing World gives a great introduction to Chambers Bay.
Chambers Bay Golf Course is located at University Place, Washington (roughly one hour south of Seattle) and was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. It opened for play in June 2007 and will be the third municipally owned facility to host the national championship of the United States (Bethpage in New York; Torrey Pines in California). Since 2007, the course has already hosted the 2010 US Amateur Championships and in 2015, will be the first course in the pacific northwest to host the US Open.
Chambers Bay is more of a non-traditional venue for the US Open as it is a links style golf course, more similar to the courses found on the coast of Scotland and Ireland and can play up to 7,900 yards. It will be the first of three straight links style Major championship venues in 2015 (Old Course at St. Andrews, Open Championship; Whistling Straits, PGA Championship). The venue provides spectacular views of Puget Sound and the surrounding Olympic mountains, encouraging imaginative and creative shotmaking, to get around the course.
Having been built on a previous gravel pit, Chambers Bay is built on sand and features fine fescue putting surfaces which provide the perfect formula for a US Open – firm and fast. It will surely be a test for the professionals – having played it ourselves, we are looking forward to seeing the likes of Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and defending champion Martin Kaymer take it on! Or perhaps we’ll finally witness Phil Mickelson complete the career grandslam and win his first ever US Open!
In the meantime, make sure to visit our Facebook page to view a gallery of the stunning views and golf course that is Chambers Bay. We will be spending the week at the US Open in June and hope to see you there as well!
