The awards just keep coming for World Number 1, Rory McIlroy – today, the European Tour awarded Rory the 2014 Golfer of the Year award. He’s probably most deserving player to win this award in 2014. Rory had a sluggish season in 2013 but did manage to win the Australian Open, going wire to wire with Adam Scott. His win Down Under was the confidence boost and momentum he needed heading into 2014.
Early in 2014, Rory came close to winning The Honda Classic, but failed to prevail in a playoff. He struggled early in 2014 with second round scoring, but he would put it all together during the European Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship. From there, his strong play continued and confidence grew – his game peaked at the perfect time. It would become known as the Summer of Rory where he would win three consecutive starts including The Open Championship, the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the PGA Championship. This gave him enough FedEx Cup points to nearly capture his first ever FedEx Cup. After the PGA TOUR season, he would be part of a European victory at the Ryder Cup – 2014 definitely turned out to be a great season.
You can bet that Rory’s focus is now primarily on the 2015 Masters where he will attempt to complete the Career Grand Slam! He’s also played very well at The Old Course at St. Andrews throughout his career, which will host the 2015 Open Championship. He’ll be looking to defend his Open Championship title there after nearly winning this year’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at the same venue.
