Michelle Wie: Nike Free TR 5 iD

Michelle Wie is one of the biggest stars of the LPGA Tour – and she definitely knows how to make a statement. The 25-year-old burst onto the professional golf scene at just 12 years old, started playing in men’s professional tournaments when she was 14, graduated from Stanford University and just this year, played some of the best golf of her career and captured the US Women’s Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

The Hawaii native also enjoys making statements off the course with her bold and bright sense of style. Footwear, and NIKEiD in particular, is one of her favourite ways to express her personality. NIKEiD is a great way for any fan of the Nike brand to create something that is unique to them – we’ve even seen it used in the Nike Golf TW’14 golf shoe. For Wie, she claims more than 90% of her sneakers are born from NIKEiD and most recently, she put her personal touch on the Nike Free TR 5, available on NIKEiD beginning in mid-December.

“I think the No. 1 goal for me when I designed the Nike Free TR 5 was for the shoe to stand out,” Wie says. “I wanted bold colors, but nothing too overwhelming. With colors that pop, everyone will be looking at the shoes and asking where I got them.”

The Nike Free TR 5 is a very popular training shoe, updated with several fresh performance features, including a new Free 5.0 outsole and an improved heel fit. With players spending as much time in the gym as they do on the range, having the proper footwear to bridge both activities is a must. The Nike Free TR franchise incorporates hexagonal flex grooves in the Nike Free 5.0 platform. The grooves allow the shoe to flex in multiple directions and enable the athlete’s natural motion (barefoot-like feel), a tenet of all Nike Free footwear. The outsole also features rubber pods strategically placed in key wear zones to provide traction and durability.

With NIKEiD, athletes can customize everything from the laces to the midsole. Athletes can also inscribe a personal NIKEiD message on the tongue. The finished product isn’t just a reflection of personal expression; it’s also a source of motivation. The Nike Free TR 5 will be available on NIKEiD.com beginning Dec. 15. The non-customizable version will launch in select retailers and on nike.com beginning Jan. 1.
