It was quite an exciting finish today at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba, the final tournament of the 2014 calendar year on the PGA TOUR. There were three players who could’ve taken this tournament home including Shawn Stefani, Danny Lee and eventual winner Charley Hoffman. Danny Lee ran off seven straight birdies on his front nine to take the lead, but the former US Amateur champion couldn’t hold on – he would not make another birdie the rest of the way and dropped three shots on the back nine for a 67, finishing two shots behind for a T3 finish.
Shawn Stefani was neck and neck with Hoffman through the last couple of holes but after hitting his ball into a fairway bunker on the final hole, he was in scramble mode. The lip of the bunker was so steep that he had no option but to hit sand wedge nearly 50 yards short of the green, then hit his next pitch a bit heavy to come up short. He would bogey the hole and finish the tournament at 16-under par.
Hoffman also had an adventure during his last hole after hitting a drive that rolled up against the base of a tree. That forced him to play a left-handed shot back to the fairway and after landing on the green in three, he would two-putt for bogey and to finish the tournament at 17-under par as the winner! He rallied from a three-shot deficit and ends a winless drought of nearly 4 years for his third PGA TOUR victory.
