The major golfing tours as definitely trying to grow the sport in the Asia region. The PGA TOUR was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia this week for the CIMB Classic; the LPGA TOUR was in Taiwan for the Fubon LPGA Taiwan Championship; and the European Tour hosted the first tournament in “The Final Series,” the BMW Masters, in Shanghai, China. And what a finishing day of golf the fans got to see!
Marcel Siem would chip in on the first extra hole for birdie to beat Alex Levy and Ross Fisher in a playoff for the BMW Masters. Siem missed a putt from six feet on the 72nd hole with the chance to win in regulation, but made amends during the playoff. With this win, Siem is now included in next week’s HSBC Champions at Sheshan International and will have to cancel his vacation to Thailand.
Fisher and Levy both had birdie chances but were unable to convert their putts. Levy looked to be on his way for his third win of the season at Lake Malaren with rounds of 65, 66 and 63. The 24 year old Frenchman had a four shot lead heading into the final round but closed with a 78 where strong winds made scoring difficult. Fisher had shot a final round 67, just one of four players who shot in the 60s in the final round, wiping out an 11 shot deficit. This would’ve set a European Tour record if he had gone on to win. The BMW Masters is the first tournament in “The Final Series” which ends the European Tour season.
