There has been talk of a slowdown in the golf industry in North America for a few years now. But in Asia, the game is growing and during last week’s Hong Kong Open at Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling, Bloomberg’s Rishaad Salamat of “On The Move Asia” spoke to Asian Tour CEO Mike Kerr to discuss the development of professional golf in Asia!
Sky Lake Resort Golf Club, Vietnam
Robust growth of the Asian Tour is anticipated in 2015 and well into 2016 and 2017. This year, the Asian Tour is playing for approximately $40 million USD and is expected to be in excess of $45 million USD next year. Although these numbers cannot compare to the PGA Tour or the European Tour, the Asian Tour is playing catch up and they are making up ground fast.
Royale Jakarta Golf Club, Jakarta, Indonesia
The Asian Tour has announced three new events in the upcoming seasons in Dubai, Malaysia and for the first time, a tri-sanctioned event between the Asian Tour, European Tour and South Africa’s Sunshine Tour in Mauritius! CEO Mike Kerr also mentions a fourth tournament in the interview, which turned out to be a $3 million tournament in Thailand, co-sanctioned by the European Tour! With such strong growth on the Asian Tour, it’s only a matter of time before we see more talent coming out from that region of the world!
