Oliver Wilson was a perennial runner-up throughout his golfing career, finishing second place on nine different occasions from 2006 to 2009. However, he would finally break through into the winner’s circle on the European Tour this year. Ranked 792nd in the world and playing as an invitee to the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, Wilson gave a gutsy performance on the final round at the Old Course in St. Andrews, edging out the likes of Rory McIlroy by one shot, finishing the tournament at 17-under par.
This was definitely the perfect place for a victory. Not only was it the same tournament where his ninth runner-up finish came, but it was also a tournament he led last year after the first round, only to finish 59th. His career had definitely come full circle at the Old Course. The Englishman represented Europe at the 2008 Ryder Cup and even reached the top 50 on The Official World Golf Ranking. However, a dramatic loss of form saw him lose his card at the end of 2012.
With this maiden win, he also jumps from world number 792 to 156 – an increase of 636 spots! Watch the video above by Golfing World and hear from Wilson himself about his career so far as well as his maiden victory.
