This past summer will be known as the “Summer of Rory” – Rory McIlroy has returned, and even surpassed, his form in 2012 when he was first named Player of the Year on the PGA Tour and the European Tour. To no one’s surprise, he was named the 2014 Player of the Year, the second time in three years. In 2014, he won four tournaments including the European Tour’s flagship event, the BMW Championship and three tournaments in a row, including two majors and a world golf championship, at The Open Championship, the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the PGA Championship. Top that off with a European Team Ryder Cup victory and that is one heck of a summer! He was also in the hunt to win his first FedEx Cup Championship, but fell just a bit short.
He regained the world number 1 ranking in the world of golf at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. Other statistics that Rory led the PGA TOUR were top 10 finishes (12 top-10 finishes), never finishing worse than 25th. He also won the PGA TOUR money title with just over $8.2 million as well as the Vardon Trophy for the lowest adjusted scoring average. Similar to 2012, McIlroy is almost guaranteed to win the money title on both the PGA Tour and European Tour.
Hopefully, he will continue this excellent play into the new year and complete the career grand slam at The Masters. This would be coming full circle for McIlroy, as his reputation with Augusta is of his Sunday meltdown and round of 80 in 2011. If he wins the 2015 Masters, he would definitely be the favourite to win the US Open at Chambers Bay Golf Club, to win four majors in a row – a possible Rory Slam!
