Callaway Big Bertha Irons & Hybrids

Callaway announced today another set of irons to pair up with it’s Big Bertha drivers. The Big Bertha brand is not just for one golf club, but for a family of clubs – here are the brand new Big Bertha irons and hybrids. We remember using the Big Bertha 2006 irons as our first set to learn the sport of golf and are very glad to see the revival of the line of equipment. In the video above, Dr. Alan Hocknell talks about the innovative technology within the new irons and hybrids.

Everything seems to be about distance these days with Callaway. The Big Bertha Irons claim to be up to two clubs longer, promising unparalleled distance and forgiveness. To achieve such distance gains, Callaway uses 360 Face Cup Technology, which is found in their fairway woods. It refers to a face that is very flexible and wraps around strategic portions of the body, with the face and body welded together – this maximizes stability and distance, particularly on off-centre hits, to keep ball speed high all across the face.

Furthermore, Callaway has added its Internal Standing Wave into the Big Bertha irons, which has also been used in previous metal woods to lower the centre of gravity and maximize trajectory. The Big Bertha irons will be available on October 17 in sets of 3-PW, along with A and S wedges. Stock shafts are True Temper Speed Step 80 (steel, $999 for eight irons) and UST Mamiya Recoil (graphite, $1,199).

Big Bertha hybrids are also offered for golfers who have difficulty hitting the longer irons. These are the first adjustable hybids from Callaway to create proper gapping throughout a set. Eight settings are available with adjustments to loft, lie and face angle and offered from 3-7 hybrids with 19, 22, 25, 28 and 31 degrees of loft. These hybrids utilize the Hyper Speed Face as well as the Internal Standing Wave. The UST Mamiya Recoil graphite shaft is carried over from the irons, so it is possible to purchase an entire set of irons and hybrids with matching shafts. These hybrids will retail at $249 and also appear on shelves starting October 17.

With these new irons and hybrids announced, we can expect to see an updated version of the Big Bertha and/or Big Bertha Alpha drivers as well. From Callaway Japan, they have already released the Big Bertha Alpha 815 and Big Bertha Alpha 815 Double Diamond drivers which shares a similar colour scheme as the irons and hybrids. Details are scarce at the moment, but you can expect the gravity core to continue as well as new face technology for distance and forgiveness. More on this soon, but in the meantime, take a look at the photo below!
