What a way to end the 2014 PGA TOUR season for Billy Horschel. After starting the season by missing the cut at the Frys.Com Open, Billy Horschel has played some of the most consistent golf over the past four weeks, nearly winning the Deutsche Bank Championship, then winning the BMW Championship the following week and winning the Tour Championship and overall FedExCup today. He started the final round tied with Rory McIlroy at 9-under par and shot a final round 68 to win by three shots over McIlroy and Jim Furyk. The win today made Horschel $11.4 million, $10 million for the FedEx Cup and $1.4 million for the Tour Championship. All this while expecting a baby in the next two weeks!
It’s not the first time Rory McIlroy and Billy Horschel have faced off against each other though – they played as teenagers against each other during their Walker Cup days. Rory started the day decently, making 55 putts in a row on the practice green from 10 feet before he started the final round. However, he had some problems off the tee which led to a couple of bogeys and couldn’t muster the energy to put a score together.
Even though he feels a bit disappointed on the way he finished the Tour Championship, Rory has still had an amazing year winning The Open Championship, WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, PGA Championship and also returning to number 1 in the world. He’ll have to shake off this final round and prepare for the upcoming Ryder Cup though! Unfortunately, Billy Horschel won’t be joining the USA team over in Gleneagles, so his season has ended today – not a bad way to end it though and with his first born coming soon, life is definitely good for the 2014 FedExCup Champion!
