Today is The King, Mr. Arnold Palmer’s 85th birthday. In the tribute video above, Jay Haas, Tom Watson, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus narrate one of Mr. Palmer’s favourite poems by Walter D. Wintle entitled “The Man Who Thinks He Can” – a perfect description of The King.
Mr. Arnold Palmer is one of the greatest golfers of all time. But his reach didn’t end just on the golf course – he was truly one of the first ever golfing superstars in the beginning of the televised golf era. His social impact on the sport opened golf to the general public. His humble background and plain-spoken popularity made the sport more democratic and accessible to middle and working classes.
Throughout his career, Mr. Palmer has won 92 tournaments including 7 Major Championships as well as the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He’s played golf with President Dwight Eisenhower, has a basketball shoe designed after him and even has a drink named after him (The Arnold Palmer). But he’s always been very charitable as well, even saving Christmas last year.
He’s definitely one of the most influential people in the sport of golf and is still 85 years young! Make sure to check out the interview of Callaway Talks featuring The King as well as watch our favourite commercial, Swing Your Swing. Happy birthday, Mr. Palmer!
