For 2014, Pacific Dunes in Bandon, Oregon, claims the top spot over Pebble Beach in the Sports Illustrated Golf.com biennial Top 100 You Can Play ranking of America’s best public-access courses. Pacific Dunes is a course that is part of the famous Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, a bucket list for many golfers in the world.
Designed by Tom Doak, Pacific Dunes opened in 2001 and is one of the most unique courses on the resort. The course blends perfectly with the landscape as if it was discovered there rather than built. Rolling fairways remain just as they were found and natural bunkers line the landscape as they have for centuries. The course emerges from shore pines to spectacular 60-foot sand dunes with many golf holes lining the ocean as well. When the wind blows, it’s a very tough test of golf – short enough to give you hope (6,633 yards from the tips), but rugged enough to test every facet of your game.
