It’s been three years since the release of Callaway’s RAZR X Muscleback iron – the challenge was to find a way to make it better. This week, Callaway announced the new Apex MB and Apex UT irons, irons that were designed with the better player in mind. They have worked with Tour players and elite golfers to establish the look, feel and playability of these new clubs.
The Apex MB irons have a traditional blade look and forged from soft 1020 Carbon steel to maximize feel. High performance wide spaced grooves on the face give players more control and consistent spin out of a variety of playing conditions. And a Optimized Sole Camber helps to optimize turf interaction from a variety of lies, giving players more playability than ever from a muscleback. There is also a progressive centre of gravity height that runs from the 3-iron through the pitching wedge – weight is progressively shifted towards the back of the head to avoid shots ballooning up in the air. The Apex MB (2-PW) retails for $1,100 and will be available Sept. 12 with KBS Tour-V shaft.
The Apex Utility irons (Apex UT with 18-, 21- and 24-degree lofts) will appeal to golfers looking to replace fairway woods and hybrids with a driving iron, which is a versatile option off the tee and fills in distance gaps when playing longer approach shots. This would be a perfect club for links style golf courses and even The Open Championship, where we saw Taylormade release their UDI (Ultimate Driving Iron) and Nike Golf release their MM Proto irons.
The UT irons feature a forged face cup design – the strong carpenter 455 forged steel face provides higher ball speeds across the entire face. It’s the same technology in this face used in Callaway fairway woods and hybrids to help the face flex more consistently across a larger area. Sole weighting helps to lower center of gravity for added forgiveness. The Hollow Body design will also increase forgiveness in a traditional long iron shape. The Apex UT iron retails for $230 and comes in several premium shaft options.
