2014 Open Champion: Rory McIlroy

After a spectacular four rounds of golf at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Rory McIlroy is the 2014 Champion Golfer of the Year! Last week, Rory started off strong with a course record 7-under 64 in his first round at the Scottish Open in Aberdeen. However, he had one of his “blow up” Fridays and shot 78 in his second round. This week at the Open Championship, Rory played strong all week, shooting rounds of 66, 66, 68 and 71 en route to his third career Major Championship!

With those scores, Rory became only the seventh Open Champion in history to win wire to wire with no ties. Despite strong charges from Sergio Garcia, Rickie Fowler and even some distractions from the gallery, Rory McIlroy stayed focused on his goal. His victory at Royal Liverpool is the third leg of his career Grand Slam and he became the third youngest to win three Majors, after the great Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Rory is also the youngest to win the Open since Tiger and became the first European to win three different Majors since the Masters was founded in 1934.

Along with a £975,000 ($1.66 million) payday, Rory’s victory will move him to second in the Official World Golf Rankings.. Rory’s father, Gerry McIlroy and three of his friends will also have a decent payday from Rory’s victory as well as ten years ago, they put £400 at 500-1 on a 15 year-old Rory to win The Open before he turned 26. It was an emotional day for Rory and his family and it showed during his post round interview with ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi. Have a look at the interview below and a wonderful recap of Rory’s week at Royal Liverpool!
