A Golfing History of Royal Liverpool

We are only a day away from the Open Championship as it returns to Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake this year! Royal Liverpool is a golf course filled with unique history. It all began in 1869 when nine holes were laid out in Hoylake and two years later, nine more holes were completed to finish out the course. Among the history at Hoylake is the fact that it’s the site where the first Frenchman, Irishman and Argentinian all won their first Open Championships!

Royal Liverpool is the second oldest seaside links in England. Despite its long history, the historic course only hosted the Open Championship twice in the last 50 years, in 1967 and in 2006 when Tiger Woods displayed an excellence of strategy and execution en route to victory.

As the Open returns to Hoylake, much preparations have been done and subtle changes have been made to the course. Take a look as CNN Living Golf looks back at not only the history of Royal Liverpool but also its preparations for this year’s third Major!
