Last year, Phil Mickelson added the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open to his playing schedule to prepare for The Open Championship at Muirfield. He would end up winning both tournaments in back-to-back weeks. As other players saw the success Phil had, they decided to join Phil in this strategy for 2014.
Many players were in the field at the Scottish Open last week including defending champion Phil Mickelson, Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald, Rickie Fowler and more. Rory McIlroy showed great promise after a course record 7-under 64 after day 1, however, had another one of his “blow up” rounds during round 2 with a 78. He would finish the tournament T14 at 7-under par. This just shows, you definitely can’t win a tournament on a first day of a Championship (unless you’re Martin Kaymer at the US Open!).
It was the steady play of Justin Rose though who would win the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open. He shot a tournament total of 16-under par (69-68-66-65) for his second victory in two weeks. This is the first time Rose has won back-to-back tournaments in his career winning the Quicken Loans National last week. Rose is definitely “made to win,” but can he make it three wins in three weeks? He now heads over to Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake to try and capture his second Major Championship!
The next two editions of the Aberdeen Asset Scottish Open will continue to showcase Scotland’s finest links courses with the announcement that Gullane Golf Club and Castle Stuart Golf Links will respectively host the championship in 2015 and 2016. Below, you can see some of the most memorable moments in Scottish Open history.
