Golf Technology is something that is thriving right now in the industry. From technology in equipment and apparel to laser distance and GPS technology, there is no shortage of items to help you play your best golf. With smartphones, golf apps have made much of this new technology accessible to everyone to keep track of their games and learn to improve.
Last year, we featured the PGA TourCaddie app, which eventually became GolfShot by Shotzoom. Shotzoom is a world leader in mobile golf GPS and instruction applications aimed at creating experiences that empower active lifestyles and enhance the fun of sports and fitness. Recently (May 5th, 2014), Shotzoom reintroduced the GolfShot app by replacing it with the “GolfShot: Golf GPS” app (an upgrade) as well as the “GolfShot Pro” ($29.99/year or $4.99/month) and “Tips and Drills” ($9.99/year or $1.99/month) upgrades.
Many of the functions of the application has not changed dramatically. You can still use the “GolfShot: Golf GPS” app as an online participation platform, use the app as a way to track your performance over time so you know what to work on, share your statistics with friends and even interact with other users who have similar interests. The “GolfShot: Golf GPS” offers real-time GPS distances to the green and even aerial 3D flyovers of each hole so you can plot your way around the golf course.
“GolfShot Pro” will grant users access to advanced features such as personal club recommendations, the ability to zoom in on targets, scoring and gaming options and more. With “Tips and Drills” access, users will get a dynamic coaching feature with a lesson library that includes over 175 videos from the TOURAcademy Instructors. You’ll be able to watch videos of instruction for all levels – the feature even uses recorded statistics to identify and recommend tutorials for users based on their playing habits!
We’ve used the original “GolfShot” (now called “GolfShotClassic”) for the past couple of years and it has always been reliable in regards to finding the right golf course and also fairly accurate in terms of distances. Like most GPS Apps though, it will take up your phone’s battery life, so make sure to have a full charge before playing a round. And during the round, it does take a couple of seconds to calculate a true yardage compared to a laser rangefinder. This remains true with the new “GolfShot: Golf GPS app.”
However, the usability is completely different – the new “GolfShot: Golf GPS” interface is completely different, yet still has some familiarity with the older version. Everything has been more streamlined with a “clean and flat” look from a design perspective and the data has become much more accessible and less cluttered. It is definitely much more user-friendly than the original at first glance. Rather than flipping through multiple screens, all of your data is now available in one part of the app. Furthermore, where the GPS Screen and Aerial Screen were things you had to flip between in the original “GolfShot” app, Shotzoom has now combined the two screens to show you distances to certain parts of a golf hole as well as an aerial view of the hole in one single screen.
The 3D aerial flyover is also improved, now showing you distances and club suggestions for your next shot – definitely helpful for courses that you may not be familiar with. Score tracking is now also much easier and more intuitive with all the information to be entered on one screen. With the GolfShot Pro version, scoring for Skins, Nassau, Match Play and other games is also available. The biggest improvement to us is the bottom menu which stays visible throughout a round of golf rather than having that “flip function” in the original app to get to scoring, club tracking, etc.
Aside from the GolfShot Pro and Tips and Drills video upgrades, the new Golfshot: Golf GPS app includes the latest golf news and offers, both on your app and in their weekly newsletter, “The Pin Sheet” with the content coming from Golf Week.
“The all new Golfshot app represents the culmination of over 5 years’ experience in developing golf mobile apps designed to improve golfers scores and their enjoyment of the game” said Ben Addoms, President of Shotzoom.
So if you’re already using a golf app or looking to transition from paper scorecards to using a golf app, definitely give “GolfShot: Golf GPS” a try! It is available for download for iOS and Android. Watch the video below to find out more about the new “GolfShot: Golf GPS” app by Shotzoom!
