After being in the spotlight for the past decade and being one of the main faces for Women’s Golf, Michelle Wie has finally broke through for her first Major Championship victory – the US Women’s Open at Pinehurst Resort’s No. 2 course. Wie has already had one of her best season’s ever and stated that this was a “second beginning” for her golfing career after graduating from Stanford University in 2012.
Since the beginning of the season, Wie has not finished worse than T23 (ShopRite Classic Presented by Acer) and has had nine Top-10 finishes including two victories. She won the Lotte Championship and now the US Women’s Open. Earlier in the year, Michelle Wie had a chance to capture her first Major Championship at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, but ended up in 2nd place – that experience must have prepared for this win!
Wie led by four shots at one point in the tournament, but one bad decision at the 16th hole led to a double bogey and a lead cut to only one shot. The nerve and pressure brought out the best in Wie though as she birdied the 17th hole to gain a shot back, then had a par on 18 to seal the victory. Throughout the week, Wie hit 70% of fairways, 69% of greens and averaged 258.88 yards off the tee and 1.65 putts per hole. Those are the kind of numbers that win Major Championships – the win was a long time coming, but it finally came. Congratulations, Michelle!
Other headlines during the Championship included 11-year old Lucy Li and also Stacy Lewis, the World Number 1, who shot a final round 66 with eight birdies to get to even par for the tournament to put the pressure on Wie. Canadian Brooke Henderson finished the low-amateur of the tournament at 5-over par and T10 for the Championship. What a great two weeks at Pinehurst Resort, hosting back-to-back Men’s and Women’s US Opens and with two great champions!
