James in Red by Dagwood Golf at Chambers Bay Golf Course, host of the 2015 US Open
Dagwood Golf is one of the first golf brands we featured on Eighteen Under Par. Their premium leather golf glove grabbed our attention with its high quality contemporary design and traditional craftsmanship. Since then, they’ve expanded their collection to include golf and lifestyle shoes, bags, accessories and more. Inspiration is drawn from the founders’ love for golf and its iconic history to create a modern authentic sports style. Dagwood Golf is based in Berlin, Germany and products are Made in Portugal.
Over the past month or so, we’ve had the opportunity to experience Dagwood Golf first hand with the James canvas golf shoe. The James model is made of a water repellent canvas and is a spikeless golf shoe featuring their characteristic orange rubber outsole. The insole is lined with antibacterial leather.
From a style point of view, it is one of the most eye-catching designs you’ll ever find on a golf course. James is offered in multiple colourways including beige, black, camel, red, navy and khaki, all featuring the orange rubber outsole. We’ve received endless compliments on the style and design of the shoe. Some of the details that we love are the star knobs on the outsole for grip, the logo insert through the shoe laces, the leather insole lining and the contrast stitching on the rubber outsole. From the construction of the shoe to its detailed design elements, James is one of the most unique golf shoes you’ll find on the market.
As it is a golf lifestyle shoe, we wore it out on the town several times before taking it out onto the golf course. This was to break-in the canvas material and throughout the weeks we’ve worn it, it has been one of the most comfortable shoes we’ve owned, particularly with the leather lined insole.
From a golf point of view, it performs as well as it looks. Although we had reservations on how much traction the shoe would provide on a golf course, the rubber outsole provided some of the best grip we’ve felt in dry and wet conditions, as well as on uneven, hilly lies. As we are based in Vancouver, B.C., we do see our share of mountain golf courses and wet conditions. When wet, the water simply beads off of the canvas, keeping your feet completely dry. Keeping the shoes clean was very easy as well, whether it was using the shoe cleaner at the course to clean the outsole or going home and wiping them down with a damp cloth.
This is our first experience with a spikeless golf shoe and it definitely won’t be the last. The only downside to such a stylish shoe is that you will have to wear no-show socks or very low cut socks. Having some sock showing definitely knocks some style points off of your outfit if you’re wearing shorts! Overall, James by Dagwood Golf is the perfect blend of golf and lifestyle, perfect for on and off the course with the style for a weekend out and performance for a Sunday tee time. You can purchase James through the Dagwood Golf website for €159 or roughly USD $215.
