CNN Living Golf: Pinehurst Resort No. 2 Course

There has been a lot of fanfare about the return of the US Open to the historic Pinehurst No.2. Not only is the Men’s tournament hosted by the famed resort course but the Women’s US Open will also be held on the same course the following week. Pinehurst first opened as a resort town in the late 19th century, providing a getaway for middle class Americans of the industrial era. Recreational golf at the resort eventually led to competitive golf and some of the biggest names in golf has made their mark at Pinehurst!

Pinehurst - Hole 1

There are a total of eight courses at Pinehurst now but Pinehurst No.2 will be the venue for the USGA’s Championship in the next two weeks. Pinehurst No.2 was designed by Scottish architect Donald Ross in 1907, who lived off the 3rd green. It was truly his masterpiece, with the green complexes and subtleties gaining recognition in the golf world. The course was restored in 2011 by Coore & Crenshaw to its roots and the natural environment of Pinehurst. CNN Living Golf had an opportunity to visit Pinehurst recently, soaking in the history found throughout the resort, including the hallways of the clubhouse.
