THE PLAYERS Championship started today at TPC Sawgrass and it was a perfect day for scoring – warm weather, hardly any wind and soft greens. With these conditions, we saw some pretty low scores during round 1, but the lowest of them all came from 2010 PGA Champion, Martin Kaymer.
Martin Kaymer has been struggling with his game since reaching world number 1. He has gone through a swing change over the past three years and has finally started to get those changes ingrained. Today, he stopped thinking about the golf swing and started playing golf – and he played his way into the record books by tying the course record of 63 including a front nine 29 and back nine 34, tying Fred Couples, Greg Norman and Roberto Castro. Kaymer has really started to play better as of late, though he has not won since the HSBC Champions in Shanghai at the end of 2011. Watch the highlights above to see Kaymer’s round as well as other players from round 1.
Today, Kaymer averaged 283.5 yards with his Taylormade SLDR driver hitting 85.71% of fairways; with his Taylormade Tour Preferred MC irons, he hit 94.44% of greens! Although he tied the course record, Kaymer only leads the field by 2 shots. He will tee off early tomorrow morning to favourable scoring conditions again, so we’ll see how low he can go before the weekend. Other players in the hunt include Sang Moon Bae, Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose, Ernie Els and Dustin Johnson. It should be an exciting week of golf!
