This year’s US Open Championship will return to Pinehurst No.2 in North Carolina. For the first time, both the Men’s US Open and the Women’s US Open will be held on the same course. Having held previous US Opens in 1999 and 2005, Pinehurst No.2 has gone through a complete restoration, headed by Coore & Crenshaw!
The goal of the restoration is to reconnect Pinehurst No.2 to its roots and to have golf in the natural environment of Pinehurst. Originally designed by Donald Ross, Coore & Crenshaw also studied and implemented the changes they believe was Mr. Ross’ original intent and restore the character of Pinehurst No.2, both visually and strategically.
As Executive Director of the USGA Mike Davis states, the course will have no rough for the first time. This will enable players to implement different strategies in playing this historic golf course. Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk have already played Pinehurst No.2 after the restorations and sound quite excited about the changes. There are only 50 more days until the year’s second Major Championship. Let the countdown begin!
