Two of the biggest names in the LPGA went head to head today in the final group of the final round of the season’s first Major – the Kraft Nabisco Championship. Lexi Thompson, 19, and Michelle Wie, 24, were both young phenom golfers and have had a lot of expectations put on the both of them from an early age. Both have won on the LPGA Tour but were still seeking for their first career Major Championship. It would be Thompson that would jump into Poppie’s Pond today though, capping her breakthrough Major victory with the traditional leap into the water near the 18th green.
It was a close final round with Thompson finishing with a bogey-free 4-under 68, birding four of the first nine holes to open up a five-stroke lead. She would finish the tournament at 14-under par for her fourth LPGA Tour victory and becomes the second-youngest major winner in LPGA Tour history at 19 years, 1 month, 27 days.
Wie finished second, birdieing the final hole for a 71. This was her 12th start and best finish at the Kraft Nabisco Championship. Wie previously finished ninth in 2003 at age 13, fourth the following year and tied for third at 16 in 2006. She also finished sixth in 2011. Wie has two LPGA Tour victories and seems to finally starting to play to the level that the public expects her to play at. With six starts this season, she has finished in the top 16 each time and should only add to her victory titles as her career goes on!
