We saw a Sunday Red victory today, but it’s not who you think! 23 year old Patrick Reed collected his third PGA Tour victory this week at the WGC-Cadillac Championship on the newly redesigned Blue Monster at Doral, becoming the youngest player ever to win a World Golf Championship event! His previous two wins came in a playoff at the Wyndham Championship and earlier in the season at the Humana Challenge.
He joins Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia as the only players to win 3 or more times before the age of 24 – pretty good company to be with! What’s amazing is that he hasn’t even competed in a Major championship yet – with such confidence, can we expect Reed to contend in the Majors this year? You can find out more about Patrick Reed in this episode of Callaway Talks! That’s two wins for Callaway Golf this week, with our local hometown pro Adam Hadwin of Vancouver winning his first ever Web.Com Tour event at the Chile Classic!
Another player who wears Red on Sundays is one that needs no introduction – Tiger Woods. After scoring a tournament low round of 66 on Saturday, he failed to get anything going in the final round after starting the day just 3-back of the leader. The back issues that caused him to withdraw last week at the Honda Classic got the better of him again today.
With one more start in two weeks (The Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill) where he is defending champion before The Masters, we hope that Tiger gets healthy soon! Hopefully, we see more of the Tiger on Saturday and sinking 91’7″ putts than the Tiger of Sunday, who winced after every shot.
Bubba Watson is also showing signs of life as he finished T2 for the tournament and also coming off some other strong finishes – he’s had four straight top-10 finishes, so perhaps we’ll see him contend again more often. Dustin Johnson was also a favourite on Sunday, though the day didn’t go as planned. He finished T4 for the tournament, but he’s been knocking on the door ever since the beginning of 2014 – hopefully we’ll see him breakthrough for a win soon, particular a Major championship!
