The Science of the Speed Pocket

This season, much of Taylormade’s big marketing push has been with their new SLDR driver and its new slogan of Loft Up! Since Lofting Up is counter-intuitive to what average golfers are used to, Taylormade went as far as explaining its new concept with a segment of the “Science of Loft Up!” Aside from the SLDR, Taylormade also released the new SpeedBlade irons this season, which incorporates their innovation of the Speed Pocket!

The Speed Pocket on the SpeedBlade irons, as well as on some of the Tour Preferred line of irons, can be found in the slot behind the clubface. At impact, the Speed Pocket allows the clubface to flex more and rebound faster, resulting in increased ball speed and launch angle, making the ball fly higher and much longer!

Taylormade claims that the ball speed will be as fast as a driver’s face and with the higher launch, the ball will also come down on a nice steep angle, allowing the ball to stop faster on the green! The most distinctive feature is that it’s fast all over the clubface, not a particular sweet spot! With the average ball striking of amateur golfers, this will surely be a big help to our games!
