Adams Golf XTD Cross-Cavity Irons

We’ve seen muscleback and cavityback irons before, but during the PGA Show a couple of weeks ago, Adams Golf introduced the cross-cavity design in their pursuit of improved distance and forgiveness. These are the new XTD Cross-Cavity irons. This cross-cavity, a cavity that runs from the top of the sole to the bottom and is enclosed by an X-shaped piece of metal, helps to redistribute weight to the rear of the clubhead. This was a priority for Adams engineers and will help get the ball in the air faster and stabilize the club at impact, especially on off-centre hits.

It also helps to generate a “gear effect,” comparable to hybrids, to help straighten out off-centre hits. Adams Golfs’ new Cut-Thru velocity slots also give the thin face more ability to flex to provide more ball speed for extra distance. Although the XTD Cross-Cavity irons are categorized as “game-improvement,” it has the look of a performance model with a thinner top line, sole and multi-material body that’s made from 17-4 stainless steel with an ultra-thing maraging steel face.

Alignment aids are also engineered into the clubheads – thin vertical lines were added to each side of the face and made out of 17-4 stainless steel. These lines were polished so they stand out and frame the face at address to ensure you’re square to your target. What also makes the XTD irons stand out is what Adams Golf calls a “Pressure Piston,” a structure that’s mechanically lodged between the Cross Cavity and the club face to quiet sound and vibration. This allows for the multi-material construction of the clubhead to make them longer and more forgiving than ever.

Don’t let the look of these irons turn you off, even if they do remind you of Iron Man or Transformers. These clubs do perform – give them a try and test them out! You can expect this pricing for the Adams Golf XTD Cross-Cavity irons: for seven irons, $599 with steel shafts and $699 with graphite shafts; for a combo set of six irons and two Pro hybrids, $799 with steel shafts and $899 with graphite shafts.
