Over this past weekend, there was some great golf played in many parts of the world. We had a great finish at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, watched the LPGA Opener at the Bahamas LPGA Classic and watched Sergio Garcia secure his 11th European Tour win at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters at Doha Golf Club. This victory has come a couple weeks after he won at on the Asian Tour at the Thailand Golf Championship. He birdied the third extra hole to beat Mikko Ilonen in a playoff, which would be his second victory in three events!
Garcia entered the final round three shots behind the leader, but birdied six of his last 12 holes for a 7-under 65, forcing Ilonen to make an 18-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole to force the playoff with a 66. Both players finished at 16-under par. This victory definitely makes up for last year’s disappointment at this tournament for Garcia, when he finished runner-up to England’s Chris Wood after he eagled the last hole to claim his first European Tour win.
It looks like the Spaniard is starting to play some really high level golf and might be a force to reckon with in 2014 as well as the Ryder Cup later in the year at Gleneagles! We’ll see Sergio Garcia, as well as Tiger Woods, next week at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic at the Emirates Golf Club.
