Callaway Talks: Apex ’16 Irons and Hybrids

The Apex line of equipment was revived from the Ben Hogan brand of golf clubs by Callaway Golf a couple of years ago. We saw the re-introduction of the Apex name with the release of the Apex and Apex Pro irons – they were some of the best performing irons we tested that year. Callaway even introduced an Apex MB and Apex UT line of irons for the better player. For 2016, Callaway Golf updates the Apex line with a new collection of irons and hybrids. In the Callaway Talks episode above, watch as Dr. Alan Hocknell, SVP of R&D, talks about the new Apex line of products.

The new Apex irons are precision engineered with Callaway’s industry-leading, category-defining Cup 360 technology to give golfers exceptional, consistent ball speed across the face and the playability of a forged players iron. The Cup 360 technology is the same technology that is used in Callaway’s fairway woods as well as their Big Bertha, XR and XR Pro irons, but is only utilized in the 3-7 irons in the Apex set. The 8-PW do not use the technology, but that increases feel and distance control on approach shots.

A progressive design with varying sole widths (wider in the long irons), offset (more in the long irons), and CG height (higher in the short irons) provide golfers with a balanced trajectory, distance and control throughout the set. The multi-piece Apex irons are forged from carbon steel and contain milled clubfaces for enhanced feel and consistency. The set will cost $1199 (steel) or $1399 (graphite).

The Apex Pro irons are aimed at more accomplished players and feature the traditional look and feel typically associated with forged blades. The irons are made from carbon steel using Callaway’s quadruple net forging technique that creates more precision and consistency from club to club. A multi material design places tungsten inserts in the 3-5 irons for a lower CG and higher launch angles while the 6-PW have less offset and no tungsten weights, producing a lower and more controllable ball flight. Accuracy and workability are the main focus of this set of irons compared to the Apex Irons where distance is valued. The set will cost $1199 (steel) or $1399 (graphite). Both sets of irons will be available at retail on October 30, 2015.

The Apex Hybrids will be available for golfers in 2H-5H, built with a longer blade length and neutral CG for players who desire more workability and control. A forged face cup improves rebound and ballspeeds at impact for longer distance. The Apex Hybrids will be available on December 4, 2015.
