Like Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia did not win in 2013 until the month of December. He got his first win of 2013 this past week at the Thailand Golf Championship – his last victory came at the Johor Open, an Asian Tour event in Malaysia last December. In the Thailand Golf Championship at Amata Spring Country Club, Sergio Garcia shot 68-65-65-68 to beat Henrik Stenson by four strokes and finished at a total of 22-under par.
He played some of his best golf this week and finally broke through for a win after posting 10 top-10s around the world this year. This strong play enabled him to beat a field that included FedEx Cup Champion and Race to Dubai winner Henrik Stenson, last year’s winner Charl Schwartzel, US Open Champion, Justin Rose and Rickie Fowler. His highlight of the tournament might have came during round 2 though – on hole 8, a 198 yards, he had a very improbable hole in one where the ball rolled across the green about 40 meters before going in the hole! Perhaps what eased his tensions on the course was having his girlfriend, Katharina Boehm, on the bag for the week as his caddy.
