Luke Donald Defends His Beef

No, that isn’t a typo in our title! You may remember our post on Luke Donald finally getting his cow over the summer. Back in November of 2012, Luke Donald played and won the Dunlop Phoenix Tournament in Miyazaki, Japan. But in addition to the trophy and prize money, Luke also won an entire Miyazaki cow, prized for their beef. Luke even said it was the best beef he’s ever had in his life! He received about 200 pounds of beef (photo below) in May 2013, worth about $80,000 retail, and even bought a special meat freezer just for the beef!

Looks like Luke might need another meat freezer though as he successfully defended his title and his beef at this year’s Dunlop Phoenix Tournament over the weekend. Luke won by six shots and captured his first title in 12 months by shooting 66-65-66 over the final three days. Since being world number 1, Luke has slipped to world number 17 in the Official World Ranking, but this marks his first victory since switching to a new long-game coach earlier this fall. He’s now the first player to win back-to-back in Japan since Tiger Woods (2004-05). Along with this victory, Luke will also pocket around $400,000 and another 200 pounds or so of Miyazaki beef! Hopefully we’ll see his game trend upward after this week and into the 2014 PGA Tour season!
