We’ve taken a brief look at Cabot Links Golf Course a couple of weeks ago during “The Match at Cabot Links” between Graeme McDowell and Graham DeLaet. They’ve had nothing but praise for Canada’s only authentic links golf course, and what a course it is to start with for our October Course of the Week feature!
Cabot Links Golf Course is set in the town of Inverness, on the west coast of Cape Breton Island in the province of Nova Scotia. There are sprawling hills surrounding a magnificent valley that leads out to the clear waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The setting is as authentic a links experience as you can get outside of Ireland and Scotland – as Graeme McDowell said, he felt like he woke up back at home on the Irish/Scottish coast (Nova Scotia is actually Latin for “New Scotland!”).
It is truly a golfer’s paradise – Cabot Links is a Rod Whitman design and really incorporates the rugged Nova Scotian landscape, dramatic seaside (there are 6 holes that play directly beside the beach!), undulating terrain and sandy soil which SCOREGolf calls “Canada’s Next Great Golf Course!” It’s even cracked the top 100 courses in the world in Golf Digest, ranking at number 82, the highest ranking golf course in Canada. Mike Keiser of the famous Bandon Dunes in Oregon is actually a backer of Cabot Links, so you can be sure to find Bandon inspired holes here as well. Cabot Links is a par-70 golf course and sure to give all golfers a challenge.
Our only links experience was at Chambers Bay Golf Course (host of the 2015 US Open) in Tacoma, Washington and it’s been one of our favourite courses ever! We hope to get over to Cabot Links and play there someday too, links golf is seriously addicting! Look out for the next course Cabot is building, named Cabot Cliffs – make sure to get there and play this beautiful golf course before the world truly discovers it!
