We’ve recently featured The Match at Mission Mills in China between Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy and even got legendary sports broadcaster Ahmad Rashad’s opinion on this upcoming match! But here’s another match that hasn’t gotten as much publicity – The Match at Cabot Links between Graeme McDowell and Graham Delaet!
They went head-to-head at Cabot Links Golf Course, Canada’s first true authentic links golf course, in Inverness, Nova Scotia. Graeme McDowell would end up setting the new course record, shooting 5-under par, whereas Graham DeLaet shot a 2-under par for the day. Both pros praised the Cabot Links Golf Course and that the quality of the golf course really gives it the potential to host a PGA TOUR event one day!
McDowell grew up playing and learning the game on links courses and even said he felt right at home and thought he was in north coast of Ireland or Scotland when he woke up! All this praise and great feedback is amazing for a course that only opened it’s doors a year ago and already in the world’s top 100! A second 18-hole golf course is underway on the property, Cabot Cliifs, that will overlook the Cape Breton coastline. This course should give both McDowell and DeLaet a taste of what links golf in North America will be like, especially when the 2015 US Open will be held at Chambers Bay Golf Course, a links style golf course in Tacoma, Washington! We were fortunate enough to have played Chambers Bay and we have to say, we LOVE the links style of play!
McDowell is currently the No. 9-ranked player in the world and won the 2010 U.S. Open championship as well as a part of the European Ryder Cup team. DeLaet, of Weyburn, Sask., is the top Canadian player on the PGA TOUR with seven, top-10 finishes this season and a great 8th place finish in the FedEx Cup standings!
