Callaway Golf is very active in their social media platforms to try and connect with their consumers, whether it’s through their Callaway Office Tips, Callaway Talks or this Callaway Explain This To Me series. In this episode of Explain This To Me, the Callaway R&D team shares with the Callaway Marketing team how they’ve created a forged performance/distance iron, the new Apex Irons.
Callaway sold off the Ben Hogan brand early last year to Perry Ellis, but they held on to some valuable technologies as well as the Apex name, part of the Hogan brand since 1972 and one of the most well known names in the history of forged irons. That is why Callaway is bringing back the name this week with their latest premium iron.
The new Apex Irons are forged, multi-material irons that really focuses on distance, which is provided primarily from the club face. The face is made of a high strength, 455 Carpenter Steel Face Insert which increases ball speeds 1-2mph for more distance – these are the same club faces used in the X-Hot fairway woods! The material allows for a thinner club face, meaning the ball comes off faster, and also a lighter weight in the club face so you can reposition that weight elsewhere in the club head, allowing players to translate the ball speed into distance by optimizing the launch conditions. Also on the club face are new high performance wide space grooves that deliver more consistent spin from a variety of lies.
In addition to distance and a high strength club face, a 1020 Forged Carbon Steel body delivers a soft, responsive feel for players, while the tungsten weighted inserts in the sole of the long irons produce a lower Centre of Gravity (CG), higher launch angles and maximizes forgiveness. The Apex Iron is being billed as a unique mixture of distance technology with the feel benefits of a forged iron.
The Callaway Apex irons will be in available starting December 6, 2013 in sets of eight for $1,099 (steel shafts).
