For players who finished 126 – 200 in the FedEx Cup Standings this year, they had to compete in the Web.com Finals to fight to secure their PGA TOUR cards for the 2014 season. That is exactly what 22 year old Seung Yul Noh did this weekend at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship in Columbus, Ohio.
Noh became the 11th youngest winner of a Web.com Tour event this weekend, winning by 5 strokes, after turning heads last year when he finished 37th in FedEx Cup points and even lead some playoff events at some points last season (he won the Maybank Malaysian Open in 2010, a European Tour event). This followed a contract deal with Nike Golf, similar to Rory McIlroy, ending his eight year stint of using Titleist clubs and balls. Finding the right specs, though, took a lot longer than expected and affected Noh’s play more than anyone thought. It wasn’t until the Wells Fargo Championship in May that he found a driver he liked; he went through three variations of golf balls; over 15 different putters and 60-degree wedges. The whole process took about three to four months, which most likely contributed to some of his struggles this year (cue Rory McIlroy’s 2013 season).
A huge equipment change combined with his new life and move from South Korea to Dallas seemed like a lot to handle for the young Seung-Yul Noh (also a Sean Foley student), but with his PGA TOUR card for the following season now guaranteed with this latest win, he can relax and unwind a little and head home to South Korea and recharge – as they say, there is “Noh place like home!” We were fortunate enough to watch him play in person at the 2010 UBS Hong Kong Open and we have to say he’s got one of the best swings on TOUR (see below!) and we’re very glad to see him succeed and secure his card for next season!
