RBC Canadian Open 2013

glenabby-rbc_feature

There is rich history behind RBC Canadian Open. Founded in 1904, it is the third oldest tournament in professional golf behind The Open Championship and the US Open. Some of the most celebrated golfers ever have played and won this tournament, including Walter Hagen, Tommy Armour, Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, Bobby Locke, Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Greg Norman, Jim Furyk (back to back), Vijay Singh and Tiger Woods. Jack Nicklaus earns an honorable mention as a seven-time runner-up in the event. The RBC Canadian Open is being hosted at Glen Abbey this year, the same course where Tiger hit his famous fairway bunker shot in 2000, which you can watch below starting at 1:32! That was the same year Tiger won the Triple Crown in golf, winning the US Open, The Open Championship and the Canadian Open all in the same year, a feat only Lee Trevino achieved in 1971!

This year, the RBC Canadian Open returns to Glen Abbey, a course we’ve featured in our Course of the Week, and has a very strong field. Luke Donald, Ernie Els, Jim Furyk, Billy Horschel, Ryo Ishikawa, Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan, Bubba Watson, Graeme McDowell, Seung Yul Noh, Charl Schwartzel, Vijay Singh, Brandt Snedeker, Kyle Stanley, Mike Weir, Y.E. Yang, Adam Hadwin, Sang Moon Bae and our hometown Vancouver golfer, Eugene Wong are set to tee it up tomorrow! You can see the full field list here!

We were lucky enough to attend the 2011 RBC Canadian Open at Shaugnessy Golf Club in Vancouver. The field was also very strong that year, including Rickie Fowler, Luke Donald, Ernie Els, Ben Crane, Keegan Bradley, Charl Schwartzel, Adam Hadwin, Jim Furyk, Hunter Mahan, Kevin Na, Matt Kuchar, Billy Horschel, Jose Maria Olazabal, Louis Oosthuizen and even Anthony Kim! Though not all of these players missed the cut, it was fun to watch them play live. The tournament ended in a playoff between Sean O’Hair and Kris Blanks, with O’Hair winning after the first playoff hole. Hopefully the PGA Tour Canada and the RBC Canadian Open comes back to the west coast again soon!
