As the third major of the year is set to begin this week, we’re also seeing a lot of custom equipment and very cool gear with the British Open theme. Similar to the Masters Custom Equipment and US Open 2013 Custom Equipment, many Touring Staff professionals for many of golf’s biggest companies will be wearing and using custom equipment and gadgets. Taylormade has introduced some of the most comprehensive and exclusive British Open themed gear, including staff bags, headcovers and like all Major Championships, a special edition commemorative logo. The royal blue and yellow accents is a homage to the famed colors of the British Open Championship. Here is the meaning behind Taylormade’s 2013 British Open logo:
The book symbolizes the Original 13 Rules of Golf, which were written in 1744 by a golf society that became known as the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. The HCEG changed its base to several golf clubs throughout the next 150 years before settling at Muirfield in 1891, site of this year’s Open. The Original 13 Rules of Golf were expressly written for the group’s first Championship, held in 1744, in which 11 players competed. The two arrows allude to the winner and first club captain, a surgeon who besides a skilled golfer was also an avid archer. Muirfield’s clubhouse, built in 1891, enforces a strict dress code in the dining room and and smoking room, where men are required to wear a “gentleman’s lounge jacket and tie.” As a links course, Muirfield’s position near the water – the Firth of Forth – gives the layout its sandy base and it’s the reason why the occasional small seashell is uncovered when raking one of its 148 bunkers.
Callaway has already come out with commemorative staff bags and ball markers for the first two majors and continues the theme for the British Open. As you can see above, the staff bag and ball marking coin pays homage to the traditions of the tournament. IJP Design by Ian Poulter has also come out with a British Open themed putter cover!
