Major Flooding at Kananaskis Country Golf Club

Kananaskis-flood11

Back in December, we were featuring golf courses in Alberta for our Canadian Province feature. Kananaskis Country Golf Course was one of the courses we featured – surrounded by the Rocky Mountains that tower over 10,000 feet (3,000 metres) above sea level, the course definitely provides an unforgettable golfing experience. Make sure to visit our linked post above and check out the photos from before the flooding.

However, over the past week or so, the area around Kananaskis Country Golf Club as well as the city of Calgary has been affected by record rainfall that has caused severe flooding. Both courses at Kananaskis (Mt. Kidd and Mt. Lorette) have become impassable and some fairways submerged in water – the damage is still lingering. The cost and extent of the damage will not be known until the waters of the rivers and creek beds recede. Unfortunately, this beautiful course that architect Robert Trent Jones once called “the best natural setting I’ve ever been given to work with” will be indefinitely closed for the rest of the 2013 season.

Check out the video below for news coverage of the flooding – we hope everyone that was affected by this flood is safe and recovering! Alberta floods relief efforts are on their way and you can contribute by contacting the Red Cross at WeCare@redcross.ca or 1-800-418-1111!
