The agronomy of golf is very important in preparing a golf course for tournaments on a weekly basis. A few months ago, we featured the agronomy of Sentosa Golf Club to see how Chief Agronomist at the Sentosa Golf Club, Andy Johnston, prepare the golf course. The stimpmeter is probably the most well known device in measuring the green’s speed but now, the PGA tour has a new device to measure the firmness of the greens as well!
This week at the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village, contributing writer to Golf World and Golf Digest, Geoff Shackelford, ran into the Director of Competitions Agronomy, Paul Vermeulen. What Paul had in his hand was a new device developed by fellow agronomist Tom Brown, to measure the firmness of the green! By dropping a bearing ball from 6 feet and measuring the center of the depression depth made by the bearing ball with a digital guage, the PGA tour hopes to gather enough data to establish an appropriate green firmness for future competitions! Take a look at the video above to see Paul demonstrate the new measuring device!
