Course of the Week: The Dunes

A few weeks ago, we started featuring golf courses in Canada for our Course of the Week feature. We featured Tobiano Golf Course in Kamloops, British Columbia and started heading out West. Before we move on to more Eastern provinces, we are going back to Kamloops this week and are featuring The Dunes at Kamloops, listed as the Best New Course in Western Canada by Golf Digest in 1997!

For those unfamiliar with the geographical location of Kamloops, it is actually in a rain shadow location which results in a semi-desert terrain, similar to parts of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah and Nevada in the United States. It is because of this that a dunes golf course could be built in the middle of British Columbia. At first glance, the Dunes is quite reminiscent of Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon. And like most golf courses in BC, the Dunes is a true nature’s golf course as “lush fairways carve effortlessly through the sand, each leading to a meticulously kept green surrounded by wild fescue and wheat grass.”

The Dunes was recently host to the BC High School Championships, the BC Men’s Amateur and the Western Canada Summer Games. With such credentials and its new 3,000 square foot banquet room, the Dunes has quickly become the top candidate for the number 1 golf course in Kamloops! If not, it surely has become the premiere location for many outside ceremonies as well as wedding receptions. A new midsize 9 hole golf course will also be added to this wonderful facility in the near future!
