Today was suppose to be the start of the Accenture Match Play Championship that features a star studded field, including Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Luke Donald and more. But a snow storm hit during competition which created a “circumstance that render the proper playing of the game impossible” (Rule 33-2-d). Once the snow started to stick, the Dove Mountain clubhouse turned into a ski lodge, with golfers indoors huddling around a fireplace with hot chocolate. So ridiculous was the snow that Rory McIlroy tweeted that he thought he was in Alaska and not Arizona!
The snow fell on the course twice today, with a brief stoppage. However, officials say that the worse is over and are hopeful to continue competition tomorrow. One thing we learned from this delay is that snow constitutes as casual water or loose impediment at the option of the player. Other “loose impediments” include “dung,” “worms,” and “the casts and heaps made by them.” Although we didn’t get to watch much golf today, at least we learned something! Martin Kaymer should be pretty use to these snowy conditions though! The most notable of the golf that was played though is Jason Day’s 6-up lead over Zach Johnson.
