When one thinks of banned substances and sports, most think of the use of steroids and relate it to the sport of baseball, track or alike. However, “doping” has gotten a lot more sophisticated and it has shown up in the sport of golf. Vijay Singh has always been known as one of the hardest workers out on the PGA tour. Tiger Woods stated that him and Vijay were the only ones in the weight room back when Tiger first joined the tour. It is no surprise that Vijay would try to gain an edge, including using deer antler spray. But as he stated, Vijay was totally unaware that deer antler spray contained the banned substance IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor). Despite admitting to using a banned substance, no suspension has been placed on Vijay yet and he is still playing on the PGA tour.
On another note but related to another type of banned substances, a meth lab that was operated inside a porta potty was found by police at an Oklahoma Golf Course! From the sounds of it, it’s a good thing police found the porta potty meth lab before any golfers got hurt.
Golf.com also published an article today on David Feherty, who had his share of experiences with substances, that despite not banned, could be very harmful. Feherty speaks very openly about his past issues dealing with alcoholism and depression. This article gives a great insight on how him and his wife dealt with it and are still dealing with it today.
