Two in a Row for Schwartzel

2011 Masters Champion, Charl Scwhartzel, won for the second week in a row.  He’s admitted that he felt he was in a drought since the Masters, but Schwartzel seems to have gotten his groove back – he’s had two victories, both by double digit margins, the past two weeks!  Last week at the Thailand  Golf Championship, held at the Amata Spring Country Club in Chonburi, Schwartzel shot 65-65-65-68 for a total 25-under par… 11 shots over second place finisher, Bubba Watson!  It was quite a strong field last week, including 2011 Thailand Golf Champion, Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, Thitiphun Chuayprakong, Hunter Mahan and Kevin Na.

This week, at the  Alfred Dunhill Championship, Schwartzel shot a total 24-under (67-64-64-69) – the lowest ever at Leopard Creek Country Club, in Malelane, South Africa.  Schwartzel’s final total was 12 shots ahead of second place finisher, Kristoffer Broberg of Sweden, who finished at 12-under.  Schwartzel was three shots off of Tiger Woods’ record for the biggest victory margin on the European Tour.  Woods won the 2000 U.S. Open by 15 shots!

There were also other tournaments played this past week.  Sergio Garcia won the Asian Tour’s season ending tournament, the Iskander Johor Open in Johor, Malaysia.  Garcia finished at a total of 18-under at Horizon Hills Golf Club, shooting an 11-under par 61 in the final round – the lowest final round by a winner in Asian Tour history.  Many players also participated in the sixth edition of the Royal Trophy at The Empire Hotel and Country Club in Brunei.  A mini Ryder Cup format, this event had Team Asia playing against Team Europe.  Some notable names on Team Asia are Y.E. Yang, K.T. Kim, Ryo Ishikawa and Jeev Milkha Singh.  Team Europe included José Maria Olazábal, Nicolas Colsaerts, Miguel Angel Jiménez, Edoardo and Francesco Molinari, and Henrik Stenson.  K.T. Kim birdied the first playoff hole to win the Royal Trophy for Team Asia this year.
