The Hills, which some regard as New Zealand’s most exclusive golf club, is located in Arrowtown on the South Island. A Darby Partners design and opened in 2007 to host the New Zealand Open, The Hills is set over 500 acres of land across a glacial valley. It will also host the 2013 New Zealand PGA Championship from February 28 – March 3. Like many of the courses we’ve featured over the last couple of weeks, there is a balance between the design and natural surroundings of the area. The design compliments the natural beauty of the surrounding lakes, waterways, wetland areas and native flora.
Unique at The Hills is the ability to play year-round. Check out one of the images above for an example of a mid-winter water hazard. Also unique is the stunning Clubhouse. Designed by Andrew Patterson of Patterson Associates Ltd., it was a Supreme Award Winner in the 2008 New Zealand Institute of Architects Resene Awards for Architecture. Moreover, the Clubhouse was also shortlisted as a finalist in the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona this past October. Much like the golf course, the Clubhouse was designed to integrate seamlessly with the landscape and surrounding areas – less than a quarter of the Clubhouse is actually above ground, with the roof topped with native flora from the surrounding area. In addition to golf, there is a Sculpture Garden, Day Spa and Gym.
The Hills is a par 72 and can play up to 7200 yards (or 6600 meters) – a great challenge for golfers with amazing New Zealand views. Be sure to check out the video below for a view of the surrounding areas from the top of the Clubhouse and also for videos of course, hole by hole!
