Course of the Week: Barnbougle Dunes

Probably more well known for the Tasmanian Devil than anything else, Tasmania is an island state approximately 240 kilometres (150 miles) south of Australia. For those who are more knowledgeable about Tasmania, they are aware that the island state is “renowned for its untouched wilderness, pristine coastline, cool climate wines and fresh local produce.” However, there also lies a gem of a golf course in Barnbougle Dunes.

Designed by golf architect Tom Doak and Australia’s Michael Clayton, Barnbougle Dunes is a real test of links golf. Just like the links on the Scottish and Irish coasts, the course offers challenges to your game that will test the limits of your swing and imagination as well as your mental game. Nevertheless, the scenic environment on Tasmania’s coastal dunes may just be too beautiful for anyone to get upset. As quoted on Barnbougle’s own website, Steve Keipert of Australian Golf Digest in January 2005 said “it is difficult to imagine a player of any handicap not enjoying the Barnbougle Dunes experience”. Since it’s Spring in the land down under, it wouldn’t hurt to think about a vacation to Tasmania to beat the Winter blues and test your golf game!
